Sagan byggir \u00e1 hugmyndaheimi fornra, norr\u00e6nna arfsagna og  l\u00edkt og   skyldar b\u00f3kmenntir s\u00e6kir h\u00fan efnivi\u00f0 sinn \u00ed r\u00edkulega sagnahef\u00f0  mi\u00f0alda, sem   f\u00f3l \u00ed s\u00e9r sagnaefni af \u00fdmsum toga og \u00far \u00fdmsum \u00e1ttum. \u00dalfhams saga er  n\u00fa   var\u00f0veitt \u00ed \u00feremur mismunandi pr\u00f3sager\u00f0um fr\u00e1 17., 18. og 19. \u00f6ld.  Tv\u00e6r   \u00feeirra eru skrifa\u00f0ar upp eftir eldri r\u00edmum (m.a.), og \u00fe\u00e1 eflaust  handriti, en   s\u00fa \u00feri\u00f0ja v\u00e6ntanlega eftir munnm\u00e6lum sem einnig m\u00e1 rekja til r\u00edmnanna.   S\u00f6gurnar eru afar \u00f3l\u00edkar, b\u00e6\u00f0i a\u00f0 st\u00edl og umfangi. \u00de\u00e6r ver\u00f0a h\u00e9r eftir   nefndar A-, B- og C-ger\u00f0. A-ger\u00f0 er var\u00f0veitt \u00ed \u00feremur uppskriftum, en  B- og   C-ger\u00f0 \u00ed einni uppskrift hvor. S\u00e1 sem setti \u00dalfhams s\u00f6gu saman hefur kunna\u00f0 vel a\u00f0  segja   s\u00f6gu.
