She went solo and got her scuba certification there along with further courses about manta rays, sea turtles, and corals. During her trip, she explored the reefs around the island and, using a reef star, planted new coral saplings. For the ones already planted and growing, the algae were cleaned off. On other days, she and the group went looking for manta rays, as well as hawksbill or green sea turtles, in hope to ID both species and individuals in the area. When a new manta or sea turtle that had not been seen in this area before was found, they were given a personalized name (Sigríður got to name a green sea turtle). Fish ID was performed every day to record their abundance. All indicator species were counted in designated areas, which was hard work. Beach and ocean cleanup was done during the weekends. "This trip was an amazing experience, especially doing this alone and with complete strangers that all shared this same passion." On the last day, Sigríður received her scuba certificate along with a marine ecology certification.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-725 aligncenter" Also on board: Our PhD student Melanie for a marine mammal survey together with colleague Sverrir Daníel Halldórsson (Dalli). Melanie‘s PhD project focuses on the bycatch of marine mammals including cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in Icelandic fisheries. Despite rough days at sea with wind speeds up to 36 m/s, waves between 5 and 6 meters and temperatures below 2 degrees celsius, Melanie and Dalli had the pleasure of seeing humpback whales, fin whales, northern bottlenose whales, and minke whales. A highlight was also a so-called „superpod“ of around 100-150 white-beaked dolphins that embraced the waves and showed off their acrobatic skills by jumping through the waves. Melanie will be at sea until the 22nd of September – fingers crossed for more spectacular sightings! Whale and dolphin surveys help collect data on cetacean population numbers, their distribution and migration. Most large whales will start to embark on their long journey to warmer waters around October/November traveling as far as the Caribbean or Cape Verde islands! However, more and more evidence suggests that some individuals will stay behind and overwinter in the cold and harsh waters around Iceland and Greenland.

16 September 2025

Jun. I was fortunate to spend two incredible weeks aboard Árni Friðrikson with Marine and Freshwater Research Institute on the 2025 International Ecosystem Summer Survey in the Nordic Seas (IESSNS), helping to unfold some of these stories. During my time on board, I was grateful for countless learning experiences. The scientists generously shared their knowledge, showing me how they process fish from the trawls, interpreting navigation screens on the bridge, and even guiding me in deploying the CTD equipment, under careful supervision. From the moment I stepped onto the ship, two things were immediately clear. First, this was a well-oiled machine, operating smoothly thanks to a strong team where everyone executed their role with precision. Second, I had entered a community, not just coworkers, but a tight-knit group bonded by a shared love for the sea and its creatures. I felt honored to be welcomed so warmly into that community. I’ll never forget the small moments, like spotting whales or identifying iconic landmarks from the bridge, as well as the big ones, like the excitement when we hauled in the first mackerel of the trip or witnessing Jan Mayen Island on a near-perfect day. Sharing these two weeks with such amazing people gave me memories and insights I will carry with me throughout my career and life. I am beyond thankful for this wonderful opportunity and wish to thank everyone who supported me on this journey. I want to thank everyone on board for making this such a phenomenal experience, especially Anna Ólafsdóttir for coordinating logistics and ensuring everything ran smoothly.

02 July 2025

Claudia Hird, visiting PhD student from the University of Otago (New Zealand), joins our research group for 2 months.

23 June 2025

After 3 weeks into her fieldwork on Vestmannæyjar, Margot shares some of her highlights:

Icelandic Orca Project Field Season 2025

In the beginning of June, I began my field season with the Icelandic Orca Project (IOP) in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, where I’m conducting research for my master’s thesis on the interactions between killer whales and long-finned pilot whales. My work combines land-based visual surveys and passive acoustic monitoring to investigate these complex, seemingly antagonistic interspecies dynamics.

Field efforts include land and boat-based searches, supported by Earthwatch volunteers. From the land station, scan surveys are conducted, and a theodolite determines the position of whale occurrences. The boat team explores the blind spots in the archipelago not visible from shore. A hydrophone deployed in a central location allows for continuous acoustic monitoring of whale vocalizations within a ~10 km range.

This season has been unusual as there have not yet been any killer whale sightings, despite their typical presence in June. However, other marine mammals have been observed, including minke whales, humpbacks, harbor porpoises, harbor seals, and grey seals. Data collection continues through July and will form the basis of my thesis on killer whale–pilot whale interactions in Icelandic waters. It is a privelage to work with IOP and EarthWatch volunteers on this project.

09 June 2025

Evening meal and pool to celebrate the success of our BSc students who completed their Bachelor projects. During the survey, I collected samples for my project and gained insight into the work onboard.

The number of trawls taken for the survey depended on indications from an ecosounder and sonar equipment placed under the ship. Since it can be difficult to predict how many trawls will be taken, I set aside 15-20 individuals from each trawl. Individuals were weighed, and their total lengths were measured before I labeled each one with a number corresponding to their measurements in a data file. Meanwhile, the crew measured the total length of 200 herring from each trawl. Tissue samples were collected from the gills, and three scales from some individuals were taken and placed on slides to be aged later. The fat content of 30 individuals was measured to estimate their fitness. Finally, 50 individuals were measured for length, weighed, dissected, and their origins (NSSH and ISSH) estimated, along with the weight of their gonads and stomachs. Ten stomachs from each trawl were set aside and frozen for future stomach content analysis.

In total, 32 stations (6nm apart) were scheduled for this survey. Later, the magnitude of chlorophyll from each sample is compared with satellite images taken of the sampling area at the same time.

I appreciated the opportunity to come aboard, collect my samples, and observe how some of the data collection is carried out by the MRFI.

01 June 2025

Kristján Friðrik Sveinbjörnsson remains with the lab as a summer research assistant working on the blue whiting samples from our NORA project.

23 May 2025

Haseeb, Brendon, Einar, Francesco, Gabriel, Melanie, Kaylin, Zaw, Tryggvi, Areeba, Margot, Knut, Kristján, Hrefna, Konný, Magnús, Ragnar, and Ragnhildur attended the 2025 Icelandic Ecological Society Conference (Vistís) at the Agricultural University in Keldnaholt, Iceland.
