This leads to increased risk of wildfires, since almost all of them are started by humans. \u00a0Empirical models for the relationship between meteorological conditions and risk of wildfires enable warnings of increased fire risk in given area. One of the most widely used systems to estimate fire danger is the Canadian Forecast fire Danger Rating System. In this project we will test several methods and develop a method that suits Icelandic conditions. Local and regional meteorological variations can then be accounted for and likely changes due to climate change examined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The role of the MS student is to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Statistically analyze measured meteorological conditions prior to known events to characterize the weather conditions leading to wildfires in Iceland.<\/li>\n<li>Analyze available and new data on fuel moisture (collaboration with Icelandic Met Office) and meteorological conditions,<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the effectiveness and differences of fire indexes in terms of how the risk of fires matches with other measurables such as actual fires and soil moisture and develop new ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The planned research will provide important, and currently lacking, information to estimate the risk of wildfires, in terms of early warning system using a fire ignition risk index.
