Ég heiti Aðalheiður Svana og starfa sem lektor og námsbrautarstjóri í tannsmíði við Tannlæknadeild Háskóla Íslands.
Að loknu stúdentsprófi hóf ég nám í tannsmíði, ég rak eigin tannsmíðastofu og hóf starf sem stundakennari í tannsmíði samhliða, ég hef alltaf haft mikinn metnað fyrir hönd íslenskra tannsmiða og og hef helgað megin hluta starfsævinnar í að efla gæði náms tannsmiða hér á landi og vinna að hagsmunamálum þeirra.
Saga tannsmíði er löng og hefur námið og starfið tekið miklum breytingum gegnum tíðina. Hér á landi var náminu breytt úr iðnnámi í háskólanám árið 2009, eins og gert hafði verið á flestum Norðurlöndum og í Evrópu. Þessar breytingar áttu sér ýmsar orsakir og má lesa um þær í verkefninu Tannsmiðir á tímamótum. Frá fagi í mótun til formlegs náms, áhrif kerfis- og bóknámsreks á menntun íslenskra tannsmiða, sem er aðgengilegt hér.
Verkið er eftir mig og fyrrverandi samstarfskonu mína Vigdísi Valsdóttir, verkefnisstjóra námsbrautar í tannsmíði (2009 -2018) en hún hafði áður starfað sem verkefnisstjóri og stjórnandi Tannmiðaskóla Íslands meðan hann var starfræktur.
Síðari ár hef ég unnið að rannsóknum á munnheilsu íbúa á öldrunarheimilum og tannheilsutengdum lífsgæðum þeirra og á viðhorfum starfsfólks á öldrunarheimilum til munnheilsuverndar og tannheilbrigðisþjónustu íbúa.

My name is Aðalheiður Svana and I am the current chairman of the dental program at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Iceland.
After graduating as a dental technician and clinical dental technician I ran my own dental laboratory serving dentists and dental patients. In 2007 I started working as a part-time teacher in Tannsmiðaskóli Íslands and later in the Dental technician programme at the University of Iceland. I have always had great ambitions on behalf of the dental technology professionals and have devoted most of my career to improving the quality of dental technician education in Iceland.
Dental technology has changed over time along with development in dental materials, technology, and computer sciences. The education of dental technician is constantly evolving. The curriculum for dental technician education in Iceland was changed in 2009, from a 4–years of vocational education to a 3–years first cycle program (180 ECTS) at university level. Students graduate from the Department of dental technology at the Faculty of Odontology with a BS degree in dental technology. Similar changes in the educational system for dental technicians can be seen in some Nordic countries and in Europe.
I and my former colleague Vigdís Valsdóttir studied these changes in the curriculum and the wrote the thesis Dental technicians at the crossroads. In recent years, my focus has been on oro-dental health of nursing home residents and on geriatric oral care in nursing homes.
