On Wednesday, August 3rd, a new volcanic eruption started in Iceland. The group went together to check out the eruption on Friday, August 5th.

Today, Ben was one of two recipients of the 2021 Teaching award from the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland. I (Ben) would like to express my gratitude for this award, especially to the students that nominated me. It is truly wonderful to have the opportunity to work with all of you and I look forward to years to come and following your future successes. 🙂

Today, Ben was inducted as a founding member of the Teaching Academy of the Public Universities in Iceland. An honor he is very thankful for and excited for the opportunities to promote and contribute to teaching in academia in Iceland.

We would like to introduce you to Mike, the microwave reactor. Here we can see Siggi working on setting Mike up at his new home. We would like to thank the Icelandic Infrastructure fund again for their generous support in making this purchase possible (grant 210558) and are excited about the new possibilities this instrument will open up for our research. Ben's new catchphrase is "have you tried it in the microwave?".

Congratulations to Dr. Mostafa Ghasemisarabbadieh on his Ph.D. Today he successfully defended his thesis, earning his doctorate. He will be joining Alvotech at the beginning of next month and we thank him for the collaboration these past few years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors!

Congratulations to Hreinn Kristjánsson who just graduated with a B.Sc. in chemistry. Hreinn did his undergraduate thesis in our group working on our polymer recycling project.

The Science Institute received funding from the Icelandic Infrastructure fund for a microwave reactor which will be hosted by the Sveinbjörnsson lab. We are looking forward to using this new instrument which will open up new research possibilities for us.

We welcome Sigurður Guðni Gunnarsson back to the group. He has previously been in the group doing his undergraduate thesis and two summer research projects. He is joining the group again now as a master's student and will be working on our polymer architectures project and this summer he will also be involved in some chemical education research along with Sólrún, where they will be reviewing the organic chemistry lab curriculum.

We welcome Sólrún Elín Freygarðsdóttir back to the group. She was involved in a polymer recycling project last summer and this summer she will be working with us on some chemical education research involving the reviewing of the organic chemistry lab curriculum. Additionally, she will also be involved with our polymer architecture project.

The group received a 3 year, 56.25 million ISK grant from the Icelandic Research fund (project 218163) for the project Brush polymers with cyclic and divalent side chains. We are really thankful for this grant and are excited about the research possibilities that it will open up for us.

We welcome Hreinn Kristjánsson to the group. He will be working on our Polymer recycling project for his undergraduate thesis project and we are excited to work with him this spring semester.
