Road dust load: Quantity, variability and changes

About the project

This student opportunity is a part of a collaborative research project, called “NORDUST II”, between the University of Iceland, The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (IRCA), and road authorities and related universities in Sweden, Finland and Norway.

The overall aim of this research project is to develop further a model, called NORTRIP, of the formation and dispersion of road dust. To do that lots of data needs to be collected and analyzed, including road dust load, to understand how much is produced, effectiveness of mitigation measures and so on.

This is a 60 ECTS MS project.  If the student is beginning the MS studies it would be possible to work on this alongside courses to begin with, or full time if their required course work is finished. This project will be partially funded.

Role of the MS student

Take part in and lead sampling of road dust load using a WDS (Wet Dust Sampler). Also to work on measurements and analysis of the samples.

  • Participate in field work, sampling with WDS.
  • Experience of laboratory work is preferential.
  • Knowledge of diffusion and advection processes is preferential.
  • Interest in the topics related to the project.

  2. A statement of interest in the project, and include long-term academic plans and research interests. A self-evaluation of strong and weak research skills, along with likes and dislikes associated with research and modelling.

 

Reference date is 1 July 2021 – processing of applications starts then, but applications accepted until position filled.

Vegryk: Magn, breytileiki og breytingar

Um verkefnið

Þetta verkefni er hluti af stærra verkefni sem kallast "NORDUST II", sem unnið er í samvinnu Háskóla Íslands, Vegagerðarinnar og vegagerða og fleiri aðila í Svíþjóð, Finnlandi og Noregi.

Tilgangur verkefnisins er að þróa áfram líkan af myndun og örlögum svifryks sem kallast NORTRIP. Til þess þarf að safna mikið af gögnum, meðal annars um vegryk til að skilja betur hversu mikið myndast, áhrif aðgerða á magn á vegum og fleira.

Reiknað er með að þetta sé 60 ECTS verkefni. Ef nemandi er að hefja MS nám, væri mögulegt að vinna að því meðfram námskeiðum til að byrja með. Hentar vel þeim sem hafa lokið námskeiðum. Verkefnið verður að hluta til styrkt.

Hlutverk MS nema

Taka þátt í og leiða söfnun sýna á vegryki með WDS (e. Wet dust sampler). Einnig að vinna að mælingum á sýnum og rannsóknum.

  • Taka þátt í feltvinnu, taka sýni með WDS.
  • Reynsla af vinnu á tilraunastofu æskileg.
  • Þekking á útbreiðslu mengunar æskileg.
  • Áhugi á viðfangsefninu.

  2. Bréf þar sem umsækjandi lýsir ástæðum fyrir áhuga á verkefninu, einnig langtímaáætlunum varðandi nám og áhuga á rannsóknum. Sjálfsmat á styrkleikum og veikleikum í rannsóknum, ásamt því að tiltaka hvað umsækjanda líkar best og minnst við rannsóknir.

 

Viðmiðunardagsetning er 1. júlí 2021 – þá verður byrjað að vinna úr umsóknum, en áfram tekið á móti þar til ráðið í stöðuna.
