I completed my BA in History at the University of Iceland in 1979, proceeding to MA in History and graduated in 1983.  I moved to London in 1987 to take Ph.D. in Economic History at London School of Economics and Political Science, graduating in 1992. The title of my thesis is The State and the Icelandic Economy, 1870-1930. I worked as a researcher and editor of the publication Hagskinna. Icelandic Historical Statistics at Statistics Iceland 1992-1995. Part-time teacher at the University of Iceland and the Teacher Training College 1993-1997. Lecturer in history at the University of Iceland in 1998; Professor since 2004.

Teaching interests
I have mainly taught social and economic history of modern Iceland and Europe. Courses include modern Icelandic economic history, the history of consumer society, economic history of the family, economic history of modern Europe and North-America, globalization, history of capitalism, historiography and philosophy of history. I now teach an undergraduate course, Economic and social history of Iceland since 1800.
