Orðið gervigreind er allt í einu á allra vörum í kjölfar mikilla og skyndilegra framfara á því sviði. Orðið er þó ekki nýtt – elsta dæmi um það er hálfrar aldar gamalt, úr bókinni Mál og mannshugur sem er þýðing Halldórs Halldórssonar prófessors á Language and Mind eftir Noam Chomsky. En elsta skilgreining orðsins á íslensku sem ég hef rekist á er í viðtali við Jörgen Pind sálfræðing og síðar prófessor í Tímanum 1982. Þar segir: „Með gervigreind eða tölvugreind (á ensku „artificial intelligence“) er átt við tilraunir til að búa til tölvur sem eru svo „greindar“ að þær geta staðið mönnum jafnfætis eða verið þeim fremri að fást við ýmis verkefni sem mannlega vitsmuni þarf nú til að leysa.“ Þetta er jafnframt elsta dæmi um orðið á tímarit.is.
Reyndar hefur ekki öllum þótt orðið gervigreind sérlega heppilegt, en það er þó væntanlega orðið svo fast í sessi að ekki verði hróflað við því héðan af. En nú hefur gervigreindin færst á nýtt stig og mikið er talað um það sem heitir á ensku generative artificial intelligence – ChatGPT er dæmi um það. Okkur vantar gott íslenskt orð yfir þetta sem er kannski ekki undarlegt – generative er snúið orð og málfræðingum hefur gengið illa að finna góða þýðingu á generative grammar Noams Chomsky. Í Ensk-íslenskri orðabók með alfræðilegu ívafi er orðið þýtt 'myndandi, skapandi, sem leiðir af sér, veldur eða orsakar' og reynt var að nota orðið málmyndunarfræði yfir generative grammar en það náði ekki fótfestu og heyrist ekki lengur.
Meginmunurinn á „hefðbundinni“ gervigreind og „generative“ gervigreind er að sú hefðbundna miðar að því að leysa sérhæfð verkefni og svara spurningum út frá fyrirliggjandi og fyrirfram skilgreindum gögnum, reglum og mynstrum, en „generative“ gervigreind fer út fyrir þennan ramma og reynir að skapa ný gögn og nýja þekkingu með því að tengja fyrirliggjandi gögn saman á nýjan hátt – eins og mannfólkið gerir. Elsta og algengasta þýðingin á generative artificial intelligence sem ég veit um er skapandi gervigreind – það orðasamband er t.d. notað í fréttum frá 2020 en mér skilst að sumum finnist það óheppileg þýðing. Ég sé ekki betur en skapandi gervigreind nái ágætlega merkingunni í generative artificial intelligence eins og henni er lýst hér að framan og í öðrum og ítarlegri lýsingum. Í Íslenskri nútímamálsorðabók er lýsingarorðið skapandi skilgreint 'sem býr til nýja hluti, verk eða hugmyndir' og í orðasafni úr uppeldis- og sálarfræði í Íðorðabankanum er skapandi hugsun skilgreind 'markvís hugsun, sem er að verki, þegar leitað er að nýrri lausn á viðfangsefni, nýjum venslum fyrirbæra, nýjung í tækni eða frumlegu verki og vinnubrögðum í list'. Þessi notkun orðsins skapandi virðist vel geta samrýmst því sem átt er við með generative í tengslum við gervigreind. Einnig kæmi til greina og væri e.t.v. ekki síðra að tala um nýskapandi gervigreind.
Þótt orðið spunagreind sé vissulega lipurt og þægilegt í meðförum finnst mér það ekki heppilegt sem þýðing á generative artificial intelligence. Í textasamhengi hefur orðið spuni á sér neikvæðan blæ – talað er um uppspuna, að spinna eitthvað upp, og það sem heitir spin doctor á ensku hefur verið kallað spunameistari á íslensku. Vissulega er spuni í tónlist eða leiklist ekki neikvæður en merking orðsins í listum fellur ekki vel að merkingu generative í generative artificial intelligence – í listum er spuninn miklu frjálsari og óháðari tilteknum forsendum. Þar að auki er ekkert í orðinu spunagreind sem gefur til kynna að um gervigreind sé að ræða – þetta gæti eins átt við mannlega greind (og ætti kannski miklu fremur við á því sviði).
Það er stundum nefnt sem eitt af megineinkennum íslenskunnar – og meginkostum hennar – hvað hún sé gagnsæ, öfugt við tungumál þar sem talsverður hluti orðaforðans er af grískum eða latneskum stofni. Með gagnsæi er átt við það að við getum mjög oft áttað okkur á merkingu orða þótt við höfum aldrei heyrt þau eða séð áður vegna þess að við getum tengt þau við önnur orð í málinu. En þetta er ekki bara kostur – tengsl orðanna við uppruna sinn og við önnur orð af sömu rót geta oft þvælst fyrir okkur til að byrja með en þegar farið er að nota orðin að ráði fara þau að lifa sjálfstæðu lífi, óháð upprunanum og skyldum orðum. Orð merkja á endanum það sem við látum þau merkja og þannig verður það líka í þessu tilviki – en það tekur smátíma.
